Day 5 - Some Days Are A Struggle
By Scott | April 23, 2007
Day 5
Miles Ran Today 32
Total Miles Run 178
Miles To Go 301.5
Well, as the title suggests, today was a struggle, mentally and physically. I will tell you this much, I am bent but not broken. As with all things in life, you cannot expect everything to go your way, every minute of every day or every day of every year. The important thing is to adjust and keep plugging away. Today was easily the most taxing of the run. The wind blew consistently out of the east, southeast all day. Wind gusts managed to be get above 30 quite frequently which made things challenging all day. I’ve been fortunate enough to have some great days so far, and it looks like tomorrow and Wednesday will present their own challenges. I will keep moving down the road one foot in front of the other with the sole intent of completing this journey, regardless of any preset schedule.
I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Please keep them coming.
Calling all Girls and Boys Town Family Teachers. I would love to hear from you and your families.

Scott…Sorry for the wind today and the struggle..Maybe it was the pancakes.
Keep that ice on as long as you can and I hope you are soaking in a hot tub right now.
One more step Scott…

Scott, so you had a not so good day today hua?? Well you know, you are entitled to those and don’t let them get you too down!! We can all wish for the perfect conditions, but is that a challenge?
What you are doing is very courageous, and not everyone can do such a thing. Remember two very important things, the LOVE and SUPPORT you have coming your way, to get your dream fulfilled is unquestionable and that is what will get you to run through your tough times!!
You know what you can do, and when to say enough is enough but that isn’t you, you can do this Scott, even if it takes a little longer than you had wished for!! Hold your head high my friend and the good days will come your way again and you will soar like the wind!! Just think you will be seeing your parents soon!! LOVE YA BUDDY!!

We’re incredibly proud of you and your determination to see this through. You can do this! We’re all so proud of you!

Scott,
Hang in there!!
Think of all the kids who might want to quit when the going gets tough in their lives and what a role model you are when facing your own challenges and overcoming them. They will say “If Scott can do it–I can do it.”
We are all praying and rooting for you.

Scott,
Keep your head up and stay strong. Your passion for this run, for girls and boys town, and for your family really shined through this morning on the radio. I only hope you and others can see that the feat of running from Henry to North Platte in 5 days is an amazing accomplishment. Let the good thoughts of others rinse the struggle from you, and be sure to keep the ice on. KOGA country is pulling for you.

Even in struggle, you continue to inspire. I really don’t know how to motivate someone like you other than — Pretend you’re lugging me up the side of a mountain, it will make you go even faster.

Scott,
From all of us in the Boys Town Athletic Department, we wish you well as things get tough. You have taken on a huge challenge. Hopefully, knowing all of us are behind you will help you through these next couple of days. We are watching your progress. I have had several inquiries from our athletes wanting to join you as you approach the Boys Town campus. Hopefully, we can make that happen as you reach the final miles of your trek.

Scott -
I hope today is a better day! My son has been so excited about your run…The first thing he asked when he got home from school was, “Did Scott have to run in bad weather today?” There are so many people following you, supporting you and praying for you. Have a great day today!

Hi Scott,
You’re running to show all youth in need how much you and so many others care about them. So if the thought of lugging melangagio up the mountain doesn’t work then think that each step is for one more child.

Overcoming tough days like this will make reaching your goal so much sweeter. You have an entire Village behind you. You’re showing tremendous strength through adversity… and are a huge inspiration to many of us.
As they say in Nebraska, if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes and it will change. The wind will be with you soon… just as we all are.
See you on the east side!

Scott,
I look out my window on this cruddy kind of day and can’t help but think of you and your willingness to endure the elements to help change the lives of the GBT kids. Someone once said, “You don’t really know who you are until you learn to give yourself away.” Well, Scott, even us new folks at GBT know who you are now. Thanks for giving yourself away for our kids.

Scott,
The best way to deal with what lies ahead is to roll up our sleeves and face it head on. No more buck passing or scape-goating. No more glossing over or covering up. No more games. We need to confront our mountain one step at a time, one day at a time; this is what you are saying to each and every kid who is thinking of quiting. Thanks Scott.

You have the “Eye of the Tiger” to keep going. The only way to move forward is one step at a time, you can do this! We are all cheering you on! You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Great Scott!!
As I envision your journey, I am reminded of the movie “Forrest Gump” in that throughout his run all obstacles and pain are refreshed with the great natural beauty of the elements and the picturesque horizons implanted in a tranquil harmony of goodness. Godspeed to you.

Perhaps the rain today will be a nice change and rejuvinate you like it does Jordyn. I am sure your ‘leg ailment’ is just a glitch and you will be fine. Just 1 challenging day out of 5…your cup is still full! I am hoping that the worst that could happen is that you’ll need to take an extra day of rest, but then be back in fighting condition. But just know that IF your body doesn’t let you finish, you sent your message loud and clear and NO ONE will be disappointed in you.
April 24th, 2007 at 9:31 am
Hey Scott,
We miss you back here at work! Keep pushing hard and know that our prayers and wishes for fair and safe weather are with you.
see you soon, Teri

Scott,
I read a great quote in Runner’s World some time ago that really applies to your quest, it is often heard around the finish line of an ultra marathon, “any idiot can run a marathon, it takes a REAL idiot to run an ultra”. shuffle forward and drink. I see that yesterday you struggled with the wind, just think it could have been raining as well. shuffle forward and drink. Remember those Saturday mornings when the wind was howling, temperatures were well below freezing, and you just paid $3 to run a race nobody was watching… shuffle on. Since your running in the rain anyway you might as well be singing. Our girls each wanted to add a thought:
I hope that you do good in this marathon and that you do good I hope that everything goes good and that you are safe and that god is with you we are going to keep you in our prayers and hope that all goes well. Thank you for everything and for helping us. Monique
Thanks a lot for running across Nebraska. Doing this will get Boys Town and the good things they do for kids Brittany
I am proud that you are running. I hope you make it here safely. Elizabeth
You have a lot of persistence to be able to run across the state of Nebraska. I hope you the best of luck and hope that you have been kept safe and well. Caitlyn
Hey I am so proud of you for being able to run across Nebraska. I appreciate anybody who would be able to do that. I can’t wait until you come through Boy’s and Girl’s Town. I hope that everything goes okay and that you don’t get sick. Katie
I am very proud of you that you are running all the way across Nebraska. Thank you so much for helping out Girls and Boys Town. Emma
Thank you so much for running for us. I hope you make it back safe and sound. I really appreciated you helping Boys and Girls Town. Kieren
I just wanted to thank you for running for us and raising awareness to Boystown. I know what your doing is going to be really hard that you are doing this for a good cause. We appreciate all the miles you running to help us out. Taysha
Thank you so much for the running your doing. I wish you the best and hope you make it back safe. We really appreciate the raising your doing for us! Jeneva

April 25th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
Scott,
I know that pain your going through, I’ve been through some vigorous things in the military similar to what your experiencing. But I think your task of running the state of Nebraska is much more difficult. You are a role model to those who are runners, and to those kids who will know of your acheivement. NEVER GIVE UP
