About Me

I am Scott Giddings and I am employed at Girls and Boys Town in Omaha Nebraska. I am also an avid runner.

I have been at Girls and Boys Town since leaving the military in 1997 and am continually in awe of the mission of the home.

It was nearly two years ago that I started wondering what running across Nebraska would be like. After experimenting with some long runs 50K - 50 miles, I decided to take the plunge and commit myself to taking on the state from the Wyoming to Iowa borders. I'll pass by two of Nebraska best known landmarks, Chimney Rock in the west and the village of Boys Town in the east, thus the Landmark Run.

Day 4 - Windlass Hill and Big Mac

    By Scott | April 22, 2007

    Day 4
    Miles Ran Today 40
    Total Miles Run  146
    Miles to Go 333.5

I am going to make tonight another short update. I can tell you that today was the best day of the run so far. I began the morning a little hesitant. My body was aching and I was really worried what signs might pop up to say “Scott, you should stop.” . That moment never came. In fact, what happened is that I felt better with each passing step. I can’t explain it, but I did. That’s not to say that I wasn’t tired when the day was done or that I didn’t have some walk breaks. I just felt rejuvenated. Maybe it was the spectacular views from the west end of Lake McConaughy, the Garden County Nature Preserve, the Platte River with water in it, Ash Hollow, Windlass Hill, the rolling hills heading east toward Ogallala. I’m not sure which it was or whether I’m adapting after four days of long miles. Regardless, I am happy and encouraged after todays run.

Tonight we are staying at Ron and Candy Richards in Big Springs. Words cannot explain how good it feels to be in a home and not the confines of a hotel. We were also fortunate enough to meet Brian, Nancy, Lindsay and Grace, friends of Ron and Candy’s. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to stay here and am only saddened that it couldn’t be longer, but i have miles to run and a mission to accomplish.

    Until Next time….

      Hey Scott,

Keep up the good work! Something that is cool to think about is all of the families here at Girls and Boystown that pray for you as they are sitting down for dinner. Think about each house and the uniqueness and diversity of those that occcupy it. These kids are able to see you take one of your wildest dreams and make it come true. I’m sure that this will help to inspire them to go after their goals in life, no matter how big or small as well. I guess that ties right in with aftercare b/c sometimes on the journey they need a little extra help. Thanks so much for your dedication. Like Scott Quinn, I’m going to have to get a tshirt so I can do my part in representing your efforts as well! :)

      Thanks for the inspiration,
      Natasha Pyfrom (FT)

As I read your posts each day, I find myself wishing I could see what you see as you make your way across the state of Nebraska. I know the point of your run is NOT to bring us the sights and experiences of western Nebraska, but it sounds so wonderful that I wish you had a helmet cam on so I could see every step of your journey.

Anyhow, my thoughts and prayers are with you and stay strong!

You are doing well Scott. I’ll have to expand on the lunch time joke; asking if you just returned from Lincoln.

Dad and I are so pleased with your progress! Of course, you know Dad…it takes him some time to read your daily journaling and comments due to the fact the tears keep welling up and he can’t see. You’re beginning to experience the value of one of your favorite quotes by T.S. Eliot “Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go” — you did it on Sunday’s run knowing how you felt before the start of it. Remember the one you mentioned very early on by Martin Luther King about not having to see the whole staircase but simply “taking the first step by faith?” — again, that’s what each day is all about now; a new step climbed every day means you’re that much closer to achieving the goal. I love the little guy on the map of Nebraska. He’s moving right along! We are looking forward to seeing you this weekend!
      Love, Mom and Dad

Wow, Scott! I ran a mile last week and thought I was doing pretty good for a 40 year old. You put me to shame! It must be the steady diet of Runzas and Valentino’s Pizza. I’m real proud of your efforts and heart for Girls and Boys Town. As former family-teachers for Boys Town at their San Antonio sight, Lisa and I saw first hand what changes can take place in a young person’s life with the support of folks like you. Keep it up! We’re praying for you and cheering you on from Texas. This long e-mail has me winded so I better go lie down.

“Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Is. 40:31)

      Scott!
I think every day you’ve started your blog with something along the lines of, “Today was the best day so far . . .” I really do hope that each day continues to be the “best day so far” for you. Greg and I have enjoyed your daily updates and we’re all cheering you on - see you next week!

Your commitment to changing the lives of our kids is evident in your commitment in this run.

I got up this and walked 30 minutes on the treadmill and thought I was really during something (smiling).

Keep up the good work and you are in our prayers.
