About Me

I am Scott Giddings and I am employed at Girls and Boys Town in Omaha Nebraska. I am also an avid runner.

I have been at Girls and Boys Town since leaving the military in 1997 and am continually in awe of the mission of the home.

It was nearly two years ago that I started wondering what running across Nebraska would be like. After experimenting with some long runs 50K - 50 miles, I decided to take the plunge and commit myself to taking on the state from the Wyoming to Iowa borders. I'll pass by two of Nebraska best known landmarks, Chimney Rock in the west and the village of Boys Town in the east, thus the Landmark Run.

    I’m On My Way!

    By Scott | April 18, 2007

It is Wednesday evening and as I write this I am on my way to western Nebraska. In approximately 14 hours I will be heading down highway 26 from Henry, NE to Scottsbluff/Gering. People have asked me if I’m nervous. The answer is obviously YES, but my most frequent answer to the question is “Why should I be?”. There is no doubt that tomorrow morning, I’ll lace up my shoes and start my “shuffle” to Omaha, and I am looking forward to it.

The drive west has been eventful so far. Since leaving Omaha, we (me and Andy Biben, my lucky first volunteer) met my mom Jane at the Grand Island exit and ate only the best pizza in the state, Papa Ray’s from Hastings. It may just be the ultimate nutrition for what I am about to do. I’ll let you know tomorrow. We said our goodbyes after about 30 minutes and continued on toward the sunset. Around Lexington I looked in the rear view mirror and what to my surprise do I see but a little green Toyota Corolla. As the car came closer, I realized it was my in-laws Connie and Dolan on their way to Colorado to visit my sister-in-law Jamie and her kids Jake and Hannah. I am telling you that if these are the kind of omens I can expect the rest of the trip, this WILL be a success.

The ultimate surprises came last night and this morning. After a meal at the Cheesecake Factory with my family, Stacie, Jordyn, and Kolby last night, I arrived home to a sign that said “Run Forrest Run! Go Scott Go! You can do it!”. You have to know that I can be pretty emotional, so you can imagine my response. I was pleased to find out it was well wishes from my neighbors Tim, Lisa, and Cole. I proceeded to pack up the van with way too much stuff for one guy and came back into the house to a beautiful, wonderful, awesome poster board card from Kolby with some very encouraging words. Keep in mind the emotions. I gave Kolby a hug, re-hydrated and went to bed. Upon waking this morning I was pleased to find yet another inspirational card and message from Jordyn. I got to thinking just how easy it is to take for granted gestures like these. I’m telling you, I am one lucky man.

If you are reading this it means that the Dell laptop and Sprint wireless connection card are doing their jobs in far west Nebraska, which means I should be able to keep the blog updated daily and you should be so luck to read it.

    Thanks! Until Tomorrow….

    Scott

      Hey Scotty-
I can not express, with words, how what you’re doing makes me feel. Pride, love, admiration, inspiration, and yes even jealousy are a few words that come to mind but they are just words. My wish is that I could give you a big bear hug. You know the kind…the kind of hug that squeezes you so tight that hearts seem to speak to one another and somehow say that everything is perfect…..You know what you’re doing right now, especially with all the tragedy that is going on in the world, in some way makes me feel at peace. I day dream of all the beauty you’ll see and the freedom you’ll feel. My hope for you is that through the struggle of achieving your goals; you’ll be able to see the beauty around you, the history of the landscapes, the sunsets, and God’s music, nature, in perfect rhythm with your feet. Enjoy this Scotty. You may or may not do something like this again, even so there will never be another first time. This is just the beginning and at the end is just the end. What counts is what’s in between those to points. Make the most of it! I hold no doubt that you you can do this. God Bless Scott…I love you, Danielle
