About Me

I am Scott Giddings and I am employed at Girls and Boys Town in Omaha Nebraska. I am also an avid runner.

I have been at Girls and Boys Town since leaving the military in 1997 and am continually in awe of the mission of the home.

It was nearly two years ago that I started wondering what running across Nebraska would be like. After experimenting with some long runs 50K - 50 miles, I decided to take the plunge and commit myself to taking on the state from the Wyoming to Iowa borders. I'll pass by two of Nebraska best known landmarks, Chimney Rock in the west and the village of Boys Town in the east, thus the Landmark Run.

47 Days and Counting and Some Good News

They days are ticking away rapidly. It is hard to imagine I will be taking off from Henry, NE on April 19th. Here in Omaha, we are weathering the remnants of what some have called the worst winter storm since 1975.

I don’t exactly consider myself an inclement weather wimp, but I am definitely not a fan of 40 mph winds, blowing snow and barely passable roads. I am continuing to log time on the treadmill at Prairie Life. Believe it or not, I don’t find it all that bad. I do have to keep reminding myself why I am running to the relentless drone of the motor. Every day I question whether I am doing enough, but can you really do enough to prepare yourself for 35 miles a day and 480 miles total? Probably not! Slow and steady is my mantra and walking will be my friend.

    Good News

I’ve made it a point to keep my bosses and their bosses somewhat informed of my intentions regarding the run. For example, it was known that I would be doing this run. It was known that I would be taking a little extra vacation time in order to accomplish the run. It was known by most that I had intended to it unsupported. A week and a half ago, I sent an update including a link to the blog, copy of the logo
and wanted to clarify my intentions for an internal fund raiser with proceeds going to the Girls and Boys Town After Care program. Next thing I know, I have offers of a support vehicle, a website is being created on behalf of the run, and other potential benefits. I am more grateful than any of them knows. I’m sure things will be hectic over the next several weeks and the 19th will sooner than expected, but I am looking forward to what happens and to the unfolding journey.

One last thing. I read a quote from Martin Luther King last week and thought it fit what is going through my mind these days.

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

I plan to just that. Take the first step. I believe that this will be a huge success if I just look at each next step as the first step. Piece of cake. Right!
