About Me

I am Scott Giddings and I am employed at Girls and Boys Town in Omaha Nebraska. I am also an avid runner.

I have been at Girls and Boys Town since leaving the military in 1997 and am continually in awe of the mission of the home.

It was nearly two years ago that I started wondering what running across Nebraska would be like. After experimenting with some long runs 50K - 50 miles, I decided to take the plunge and commit myself to taking on the state from the Wyoming to Iowa borders. I'll pass by two of Nebraska best known landmarks, Chimney Rock in the west and the village of Boys Town in the east, thus the Landmark Run.

    Is it April 19th yet?

    By Scott | March 17, 2007

    Quite simply, NO!

Really, it is a good thing. I wish it were April 19th, but there is plenty to be done between now and then. I just about have enough volunteers for the support vehicle. There are still some logistics to be ironed out, namely, where we’ll stay at the end of each day. So far we have lodging nights 4, 7, 9, 10, and maybe 11. Some nights are covered, others will be spent in a friendly hotel or motel. The idea is to raise money however, not spend it, so if you know any compassionate souls feel free to send them my way.

Training is going very well. My weekly mileage is increasing. I’ve gone from 50-60 miles a week a month ago, to 70, 80, 90 miles in the weeks after. 90 miles may not sound like much to seasoned distance runners, but I feel the difference is in the quality of my runs vs. a marathon training program, which involves a combination of distance, speed, hills, rest and recovery. My intent is to put in slow, consistent mileage days. No days off and no injuries. It is very tough mentally to shuffle through a 12-15 mile run every day, but it is also very necessary, as I believe the major challenge will be mental mindset. The last couple weeks leading to the 19th will entail 2 and 3 times daily runs to simulate what I’ll experience during the run. Believe me, 3 times a day is no easy task when you mix in the real priorities of family and work.

I COULD walk 35 miles a day, but then this would be considered the Landmark Walk. That’s not to say I won’t spend some time walking. I just plan to walk as a small break leading up to the next running segment.
