The Return - Day 5 It Keeps Getting Better
By Scott | October 24, 2007
I am starting to sound like a broken record, but there is simply no better way to describe the last few days other than perfect. Yeah I said it… perfect, perfect, PERFECT. Another cloudless sky, another day in the 60’s. So what else could add to this day?
Besides the fact Andy was along today, I encountered one of the ugliest human beings on the face of the earth just before reaching Chapman. It was my brother Jamie on his way back to Hastings from Central City. He had been in Central City working and stopped to say hello. Perfect timing! It was lunch time and I WAS hungry. I finished the run in to Chapman, hopped in Andy’s car and drove to Central City for lunch at Woody’s with Andy and Jamie. Yes, I did go back to Chapman and run the route back to Central City.
I did discover Central City, a town I had not been in before and found it to be a very nice mid-Nebraska city. It did have a drive through coffee shop after all, and you know a town has arrived when it can make that claim. Yes, I had a hazelnut latte and it was perfect as with everything else these days.
Tomorrow, I am on my way to Osceola. I don’t expect much between Central City and Osceola. You never know, sometimes the best things in life are the least expected, so I could be in for the time of my life.
Someone please tell me what these markers mean.
I have added a photo gallery. It is very remedial gallery. Check it out at:

After writing this, I had a few minutes to think about what a lucky man I am. I have a two beautiful daughters, great family, great friends. I work for Girls and Boys Town. How many places would allow their employee the time to fulfill one of his dreams and be as supportive as they have been? I’ve heard from family, friends, family of friends, co-workers, Girls and Boys Town kids and Family Teachers, and people I have never even met. I’ve made friends (Jay in North Platte comes to mind). I’ve had time to reflect on past, present, and future. I’ve been allowed time to contemplate the important things in life. I AM incredibly blessed that I am to be able to do this for me and for the kids of Girls and Boys Town. I shudder to think what will go through my mind if I ever have the opportunity and time to take my dreams across the country. For now, I will be thankful for the moment.
Thank You,
Scott

if you really want to know what ROW means, you have to ask the municipality. i am sure it does have some kind of significance. otherwise it would be a pity.
unbelievable Scott Gent just the other day i was thinking what does he do with his job in the meantime when he’s running.
Take care
Love and Kisses from all of us here in Lebanon

You are truly blessed. Lucky is the man who ‘can’ and ‘will’ count out his blessing.
ROW is a command given to all those out on the road who are using ROW BOATS!!!
Just joking…. I agree with AMY…check it out with the people in charge. Of course here in Lebanon if you asked that question you’d probably get the weirdest answer ever…like: “It is put there for the ROW BOATS which people need to use on the HIGHWAY!!!” ha ha ha
Keep on Running

After extensive research, and I should tell you that Lebanese people do EXTENSIVE research, it was found that ROW stands for: Right Of Way. Tha is what the USA highway department says. So go figure….. Does that makes sense to you? i.e. from where and how you have seen them?
Anyway….have a great DAY six!!!! Inshallah no RAIN.

Dear SCott-
You are an inspiration to everyone around you, and it is hard not to get a little choked up thinking about what you are taking on! Big time stuff pal, for a great cause. Your family, friends, and colleagues are lucky to have such a person on their lives. Loved seeing the picture of Jamie also! Tell your brother Bernie says hello. Keep leading the way, with your example of ’service’!
Sincerely,
Bernie McGrenahan

Save some energy for when I get out there! Keep up the great work. We are all following you and talking about how proud we are. It also keeps our mind of the football team, and on something more important.
We look forward to reading the days events so keep ‘em coming.

Hi Scott,
I very glad to see your having a perfect excursion across Nebraska and fulfilling your dream. As with most goals, if they are accomplished on the first try, they were set too low. However, taking on a goal of this such as yours is much higher than most people would even think about let alone follow through. ROW is a marker that mean Rover is buried there. Not really, I believe it means Right Of Way. For some reason on state highways, they mark the boundry of state property adjacent to private property. As a matter of fact, the village of Boys Town has them along US Highway 6 or West Dodge Road. Good luck with the rest of the run and don’t overdue it. I continue to wear the Landmark Run shirts to PLC with people asking me about. Be safe, Scott

–wasn’t able to post to day 6 of “return” so am posting to day 5.
Scooter–
Though it may feel like that’s what you have been doing….”scooting” I assure you, you are taking the correct steps to accomplish your goal on this “return to the road” Landmark 2007~Yes, you said 2007 so you are well within your goal for the year and and your desire to bring awareness to the kids of Girls and Boys Town! We are all so proud of the progress you have made to date and we miss you terribly.
We’ve spent the past 7 days with you in our daily existence! We are thankful for Andy and for Jamie P. who will join you shortly. What wonderful gestures to help and encourage you on the road to completion. Yes, again you are wonderfully blessed with the day-to-day support you have been receiving this time around and by just trusting that every day will present the ongoing necessities required to “finish the course”.
Mmmmm New York Strip steaks on the grill sound awesome! Quite unlike the Beef and Egg Noodles received here (even for breakfast? Go figure!)But good fuel to continue the mission you are on.
Yes, selfishly we miss you, but thrilled you are on the road to completion of a goal you dreamed of in the past couple of years. Once again, to quote a quote you quoted of Martin Luther King’s about not having to see the whole staircase but simply “taking the first step by faith‖well, again, that’s just what you have been doing again on your “Return to the Road”. You will see your dream come true in just 4 more days! It has to be really rewarding to begin seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Baby steps! Goals can be accomplished.
You mentioned that the only sad thing about this trip is that is has to end? That’s true, but there is always another day; another year. You and the kids of Girls and Boys Town will benefit from your “dream” to put your love for running to the best use possible. The end of this trek is nearing but the end of your goals and your desire to put what you love doing for a tremendous cause is an ongoing venture and with that in mind-well, there is no end.
Way to go, Scooter.
Love,
Mom and Dad

Scotty-
I am so proud to have a genetic link to you. It is tremendous that you returned to your run. I think it says far more about your character than just the run itself. It sets an outstanding example for the kids. This time around, you knew exactly how difficult this undertaking would be. You could have easily turned your back and let the landmark run slip away forever. But you hit it head on, despite the level of difficulty, not only willingly but enthusiastically. That is how challenges in life should be handled. You don’t avoid something just because it’s “hard”, you face it, with optimism and enthusiasm.
You describe your days as “perfect”…what a fantastic reward for your perseverance. I’m so glad for you. Your pictures are beautiful…you have such a poetic eye. How lucky you are to get the chance to experience the country in such a personal way.
I wish I would have gotten to see you while you were here. But your mother enjoyed you being around so much, I didn’t want to steal even one moment that she could have had with you. As proud of you as I am, SHE still is your #1 fan.
I love you…you’re in my thoughts and prayers.
Your Favorite Cousin,
Danielle
